Match Report

Bonds Glen

Date:

27/06/2010
Venue: Bonds Glen

On Sunday the locals made the long bus trip to Londonderry to take on NWCU Section 1 league leaders Bonds Glen and in a gripping game lost by 4 wickets in the last over. Batting first Hegarty and Jamison got Derriaghy off to a flyer with a stand of 48. Hegarty had contributed 37 of these before he edged behind. In a revamped batting order, Hewitt batted at 3 and he was the aggressor in a stand of 61 with Jamison. Jamison was content to take 1s and 2s and let Hegarty and now Hewitt attack. Hewitt fell for 34 and at drinks, Derriaghy sat at 120 for 2. After drinks, Derriaghy unfortunately lost Lewis for 8, but Suleman helped Jamison steady the innings. Suleman was unluckily out lbw for 16 and more bad luck for Derriaghy saw Jonny Bell caught and bowled for 15 from what appeared to be a ‘bump’ ball. The score was now 195 for 5 in the 31st over and with 9 overs Derriaghy pushed on and Jamison reached his 50 before falling for 57. Stephen Cairnduff (13), Jennings (21) and Hughes (12 not out) all added vital runs as Derriaghy closed their 40 overs on 248 for 9.The previous day Bonds Glen had chased 259 to win so Derriaghy knew they had to be at their best. Suleman gave then a good start when he bowled the opener with the score at 25. The next stand of 87 put Bonds Glen in the box seat and it was only when Lewis caught Robinson off Hewitt at 112 did Derriaghy get their humps up. Lewis returned to the attack and took 2 quick wickets and at 150 for 4 after 26 overs the game was intriguingly poised. However, Hall was still at the crease having survived a good stumping shout, an excellent lbw shout, and 2 drops. He lost his skipper Hamilton at 192 when Suleman clean bowled him and then Lewis took a catch off Jennings’ bowling and the hosts were 211 for 6 after 35 overs. That left 38 needed from 5, but a shocking over by Jennings yielded 18 runs and suddenly Bonds Glen needed 20 from 4. The last throw of the dice saw Suleman and Lewis return to bowl out but with no luck, as Hall cracked a boundary to bring up his ton and his sides place in the semi final as Hughes completed the penultimate over. Derriaghy were disappointed to lose but took heart from their good all round display, but more importantly from the 4 points picked up at Laurelvale on Sunday.
