Match Report

Muckamore

Date:

08/05/2010
Venue: Queensway

Derriaghy entertained Muckamore for the 2nd time in 3 weeks, this time in the NCU Challenge Cup, and again suffered a crushing defeat. Muckamore are clear favourites for the Senior 1 title and inflicted a 7 wicket defeat on Derriaghy. Derriaghy skipper Matthew Jennings won his first toss of the season and had no hesitation in batting first. He and Stuart Hegarty opened the innings and put on 18 for the 1st wicket. In truth the Muckamore bowlers bowled a slightly negative line, often bowling outside off stump and rarely attacking the stumps. Jennings patience broke 1st as he loosely drove at Drummond and was caught at 2nd slip. This brought new overseas player Faheem Suleman to the crease and he got off the mark with a boundary. The pair put on 17 for the 2nd wicket before Hegarty mistimed a drive and was caught at mid on. The main stand of the innings followed between Suleman and Andy Kenny, worth 50. The pair ran their singles and twos very well and showed class in putting the bad ball away before Suleman unfortunately top edged a long hop from Neill and was caught by the wicketkeeper to depart for 29. This brought Lewis to the crease and in his usual fashion looked to dominate early. He struck 2 huge sixes and just as he was looking to have got himself in he fell for 18. Soon afterwards, Kenny fell to a catch at long off, his innings of 41 proving he is getting back to his best. At this stage Derriaghy were 123 for 5 and staring down the barrel of another disappointing total, and this was to prove the case, as the last 5 wickets fell for 36 runs. Ricky Hewitt, fresh from his 81 for the 2nd XI on Bank Holiday Monday, looked good on the drive, but this was to be his downfall thanks to a fine catch at extra cover by Baguley. The only remaining batsman to show any resistance was Ross Bailey, who showed glimpses of his potential in a stubborn knock of 13. When Bailey fell the innings came to a close at 159 all out. The Derriaghy total was well below par and the hosts knew they needed a huge effort in the field. Their chances were dealt an early setback, knowing that main strike bowler Lewis had hurt his shoulder when batting. He opened the bowling despite the discomfort but was not quite his usual self. Horwood and Baguley opened for Muckamore and put on 57 before Horwood was clean bowled by Wayne Hughes. The pair were very aggressive, with Baguley in imperious form. Horwood was far from fluent and Hughes exploited this with a good delivery. Baguley was joined by van der Merwe and they took the score to 83 before Suleman took his maiden Derriaghy wicket courtesy of a stunning catch from Hewitt. Hewitt took the one handed catch at full stretch to his weaker left side. Suleman was bowling with decent pace and a bit of movement but ultimately his length was a tad short, but he was delighted to open his account for the club. This brought Muckamore’s overseas player, Kametekar to the crease, and he combined with Baguley to take the score to 155 before Hegarty clean bowled Baguley just short of a well deserved ton. Baguley scored 96 to follow his 97 in the previous encounter. This was to be Derriaghy’s last success as Muckamore cruised home in the 22nd over to a total of 163 for 3. Derriaghy know they played the leagues best side but also know they can, and will, play a lot better this season, and with Woodvale travelling to Queensway on Saturday, they have a huge chance to get back on track. Derriaghy would like to thank the cast and crew of the Davy Jones Musical for sponsoring the match ball.
