Derriaghy will be absolutely delighted to see the back of Muckamore for the season, as their 2nd league game of the season, brought forward to last Sunday due to Muckamore’s ground undergoing work on the square, resulted in another crushing defeat, this time the margin was 7 wickets.Derriaghy skipper, Matty Jennings, was delighted to win the toss and choose to bat first on a good looking wicket, but will have been disappointed to total just 126 in 43 overs. Derriaghy tried a new opening pairing of Stuart Hegarty and Adam Jamison and both batsmen showed good concentration and application in taking the score to 23 before Hegarty (9) was bowled by visiting skipper McCulloch. This brought Faheem Suleman to the crease, but soon after he lost Jamison, caught and bowled by McCulloch for 12. At this stage Derriaghy needed a good partnership and new batsman Andy Kenny and Suleman set about this well against the spin of Coetzee and Kametekar. The drinks break came at arguably the wrong time for Derriaghy as it disrupted the momentum of the batsmen and the 2nd ball of the 26th over saw Suleman play a loose sweep and fall to Kametekar for 14, putting on 31 for the 3rd wicket. The next man in was Craig Lewis who in typical fashion looked to bat to ball early, but bad luck again transpired against Derriaghy as Kenny, who was starting to find his feet in the middle and looked solid, was given out stumped for 14 with the score on 65 when he appeared to have his foot grounded. Jennings came and went in the same Kametekar over and from 63 for 2 Derriaghy suddenly were 73 for 5. Ricky Hewitt joined Lewis and they put on a solid 37 with both batsmen finding the boundary. With the score on 110 for 5 and things going well for Derriaghy, Gill removed Lewis for a fine 34. Lewis continues to bat well this year, and no doubt a big score is just round the corner. The Derriaghy tail unfortunately couldn’t wag and with Hewitt removed for 13, the hosts stuttered to 126 all out. In reply Derriaghy knew they needed quick wickets to have any chance, but had only the small matter of Baguley in their way, the batsman who has scored 193 in 2 innings against them this year. Lewis and Suleman opened up for Derriaghy, but with Lewis nursing a back strain, Baguley and Horwood were able to put on 51 for the 1st wicket before Suleman had Baguley caught by Hewitt for 23. Horwood followed soon for 23, well caught and bowled by Suleman, and the score was 58 for 2 and Derriaghy sniffed a half chance. This belief was further heightened when Suleman produced an unplayable delivery to Kametekar first up. However, Kametekar dug deep and batted very sensibly to steady the ship. He did lose van der Merwe for 19, well caught by debutant Johnny Bell at square leg off the bowling of Hewitt. Kametekar nursed the strike very well and saw Muckamore home with 7 wickets and 27 overs to spare. He ended on 30 not out with Dunlop 8 not out. Suleman bowled with a bit of movement for 2-39 from 7 and Hewitt picked up a wicket to take 1-18 from 4. Wayne Hughes continues to impress this year and his growing confidence and maturity saw him bowl 6 overs for just 24, with Kametekar happy to deal in just 1s and 2s against him. This defeat sees Derriaghy sit on just 1 win from 4 league games in 2010, but with 2 of these versus Muckamore and 1 versus Woodvale, the club mustn’t get downhearted, especially with a massive month coming up, with games against Holywood, Dundrum, Cliftonville and Laurelvale. This weekend Derriaghy travel to Holywood for a big league game and on Sunday host Creevedonnell from Londonderry in the Ulster Shield.Derriaghy would like to thank the DCC Monday Club for their kind sponsorship of Sundays match ball.
