On Saturday on a lovely day at Bangor, Derriaghy skipper Matty Jennings opted to make first use of a lovely batting deck, but was horrified at the start his side made, sitting at 6-2 and then 16 for 4. Chris Adams, Adam Jamison, Andy Kenny and Craig Lewis were all out, mainly due to Bell’s burst of 3-11 from his first 4 overs. Stuart Hegarty was battling valiantly and showed good concentration and determination, and no less skill, as the opener knuckled down along with Faheem Suleman in bringing the score to 42 before Suleman fell in the 16th over. Hegarty was starting to add valuable runs to his solid defence and when Ricky Hewitt joined him, the pair really started to put Bangor under some pressure. Bangor’s change bowlers let their side down and started getting their lines and lengths wrong, and Hegarty and Hewitt prospered. Hewitt was strong on the pull and hook while Hegarty played some nice straight drives. Hewitt raced past Hegarty and recorded his maiden half century for the 1st XI before he fell for 59 (11 x 4’s and 1 x 6) with the score on 115, a stand of 73. Hewitt is having a decent season with the bat and is starting to put some runs to his name. Any Bangor hopes of a quick finish were soon eradicated as Jennings joined Hegarty and again they knuckled down and fought hard. Hegarty by this stage was nearing a half century was massively unlucky when a straight shot held up in the wind and Anderson took a spectacular catch diving forward at long off, to end a stand of 38. Hegarty had scored 47 (6 x 4’s and 1 x 6) and had held the innings together very well indeed. Unfortunately, his dismissal saw the Derriaghy innings quickly subside as Jennings fell for 25 (3 x 4’s and 1 x 6) and Bell and Cairnduff quickly followed, to end the innings on a sub standard 159, but at least something to bowl at.In reply, Derriaghy needed quick wickets, and Suleman duly delivered having Rushe lbw and Hewitt bowled with the score on 47. Derriaghy were buoyed by this and when Hewitt had Hutchinson caught by Lewis at mid wicket, they sniffed a real chance of an upset. However, the Nixon brothers had different ideas and after easing themselves in they added 84 for the 4th wicket before Hughes had A Nixon caught by Kenny for 59. At 145 for 4 the game was as good as over, but Suleman added another wicket to his tally with a caught and bowled against M Nixon for 26. The next man, McLarnon did not look comfortable and luckily scored 12 not out to see his team home by 5 wickets. Another 30 runs on the board may have made the game interesting as the Bangor tail appeared exposed. Suleman claimed 3-40 in 8.5 overs while Hewitt had 1-26 in 5. Hughes bowled brilliantly and had 1-15 in his 7 overs.
