A sensational century from Colin Crookshanks paved the way for Derriaghy to record their 2nd league victory of 2010. The locals beat Cliftonville by 15 runs in an enthralling run fest at Queensway.Following last weekend’s win against Creevedonnell, Derriaghy were confident of another victory. The home side won the toss and choose to bat first on a lovely looking, but slightly slow pitch. Openers Stuart Hegarty and Matthew Jennings were very watchful in their stand of 29 before Jennings fell for 9. This brought Crookshanks to the crease and together with Hegarty they used all their experience to set a platform for the Derriaghy middle order. They took the score to 83 just after drinks when Hegarty, who like Crookshanks had looked in little trouble, fell for 34. Andy Kenny was the next man in, and in his 8 overs at the crease looked very dominant in scoring 35, dominating a stand of 52 with Crookshanks who had by now reached a deserved half century. If that stand was quick, the next partnership of 40 between Craig Lewis and Crookshanks was blistering. Lewis started by hitting his first 2 balls for 10, finally scoring 31 in just 3 overs at the crease. His departure saw the scoreboard read 176 for 4, and Faheem Suleman was the new batsmen. Suleman and Crookshanks rotated the strike really well during their stand, and despite scoring few boundaries, still put on 27 in 5 overs, before Suleman fell for 16. By this stage Crookshanks was nearing the nervous 90s, but his new partner Ricky Hewitt took some pressure of him by scoring a quick 12 before being run out, sacrificing himself to get Crookshanks on strike for the penultimate over. In this over Crookshanks stuck 2 beautiful straight sixes to reach the magical ton. His innings was a perfect example of working hard to get himself in and then accelerating once his eye was in. He struck 11 boundaries and 3 maximums, and in the process become Derriaghy’s first home grown senior centurion for nearly 20 years, taking the record off Alan Lewis. When he was finally dismissed in the last over, Crookshanks received a thoroughly deserved standing ovation from the Derriaghy supporters and his ecstatic team-mates. The last pair of Wayne Hughes and Johnny Bell took the score to the final total of 256 for 8.In reply, Cliftonville needed a solid start but this didn’t materialise as Lewis clean bowled Cahill for a duck. This brought Sczygiol to the crease and he was to become a key figure in the run chase. He lost his partner Munn with the score at 59, Suleman taking a good catch at extra cover off the bowling of Hewitt. By now Sczygiol was in his stride and was striking the home attack at will. He had enjoyed a few lifelines but his wicket was going to be key. He soon lost another partner when Turkington was clean bowled by Hewitt and the score was 78 for 3. Neill was now the new batsmen and for the next 12 overs they were devastating, in adding 115 runs. At 193 for 3 with 20 overs still remaining, Cliftonville appeared to be cruising. Skipper Jennings brought himself back into the attack and the choice was proved correct as he picked up the prized wicket of Sczygiol for 116, superbly caught by Jamison at long on. In the next over there was a run out, as Whitten was run out for 0, and Cliftonville were suddenly 202 for 5, still 55 runs adrift. They had time and wickets on their side, but the pressure was now mounting, and Jennings then picked up the wicket of Cliftonville pro von Belon for 1 before the returning Suleman removed Mulholland and the score was now 230 for 7, with 27 needed in 10 overs. With Neill still at the crease this still looked a canter for the visitors, but Jennings had other ideas and thanks to a good catch at square leg by Lewis, Neill was dismissed for 64. This prompted Jennings to bring back Lewis and Suleman and the end was soon nigh for Cliftonville as Lewis clean bowled Blain for 5 and Suleman bowled Spence for 0, and Cliftonville were 241 all out. This prompted wild celebrations as Derriaghy knew they showed tremendous character, grit and determination to pull this win out of the bag. They were indebted to Crookshanks magnificent century, but the team played well as a whole and the true DCC spirit was evident for all. Jennings recorded figures of 3-47 from 9, Suleman 2-39 from 9.1, Lewis 2-44 from 9 and Hewitt 2-41 from 7. Hughes bowled his 10 overs for 50.This weekend the club have a double header, travelling to league leaders Bangor on Saturday before a huge clash with Dundrum at The Meadow on Sunday.
