Match Report

Dundrum

Date:

29/05/2010
Venue: The Meadow

With Saturday’s defeat still fresh, Derriaghy travelled to Dundrum in a massive clash at the foot of the table. On a typical Dundrum wicket, the hosts batted first and scored 236. In fairness, Derriaghy bowled better than that total suggests as Dundrum batsman enjoyed some luck, with edges and chips into the field landing short or wide of fielders. Hewitt picked up the first Dundrum wicket with the score on 37 when he clean bowled Calvert. Tormey was the next batsman to come and go with the score on 73, Hewitt picking up his 2nd wicket thanks to a good cover catch by Suleman. The next wicket was key as Dundrum pro Craig joined McNerlin who by now was nearing his half century. McNerlin fell for 48 with the score on 113 in the 31st over when Jennings took a catch off Hegarty’s bowling. Derriaghy struggled for the next wicket as Watson enjoyed many lives and near escapes as he struggled against Hegarty in particular. He eventually fell for 27 when Hegarty got his 2nd wicket with a caught and bowled. Maguire was the next man in and he can be a dangerous player, but he fell quickly for 11 when Jennings took a good low catch at long on off Hewitt’s bowling. By now, Craig had accelerated past 50 and was striking the ball to all areas off the ground, but he was dismissed for 88 when Suleman bowled him. Bassett and Connor took the final total to 236. Hewitt was the pick of Derriaghy’s bowlers with 3-58 from 9, while Hegarty bowled well for 2-35 from 7. Suleman with 1-43 from 10 was the other wicket taker, while Hughes was excellent, his 10 overs costing just 29 runs.In their reply, Derriaghy needed a good start, but the wicket had other ideas. Suddenly, balls were popping or skidding off lengths and when the home spinners came on, the ball turned square. After grafting very hard in the opening stand of 25, Jamison will be disappointed to run himself out for 12. Colin Crookshanks came to join Hegarty and the pair added 36 before Maguire had Crookshanks caught for 10. By now, Maguire was turning the ball viciously and this accounted for both Kenny (16) to a tight lbw shout on a turning wicket and Lewis (1) to a low delivery. Hegarty had fallen at the other end by this stage to a good catch off the bowling off McNerlin for a good 38 (3 x 4s and 3 x 6s), showing his good recent form, and Derriaghy were in trouble at 66 for 4. Things worsened for Derriaghy when Suleman received an absolute shocking lbw decision and fell for 10. He lunged forward on the sweep and was controversially given lbw when the ball was a long way from the stumps and tight to leg stump, never mind the spinning nature of the wicket. How Derriaghy wished they enjoyed some luck. This dismissal on 93 led to a rapid climax as only Hewitt with 22 (2 x 4s and 1 x 6) showed any resistance and the tail meekly surrendered to 125 all out.
