A blistering new ball burst from Craig Lewis and Ricky Hewitt ensured Derriaghy bounced back from their opening day defeat by recording a 100 run victory over Armagh last Saturday. Derriaghy were boosted by the return to the team of Stuart Hegarty and Colin Crookshanks and after being asked to bat first they posted 172 in a game reduced to 44 overs per side. Hegarty and Stephen Cairnduff gave Derriaghy a solid start with a stand of 26 before both fell in quick succession. This brought Matthew Jennings and Andy Kenny together and their stand of 39 gave the team a platform to build on. Kenny looked in good touch but fell for 16, meaning Lewis joined his captain and like last week they didn’t waste much time in adding 40 before Lewis fell for 24 when he was just getting going. Shortly after, Jennings played a rash shot and was out for 35, leaving Derriaghy at 109 for 5. At this stage Derriaghy’s most experienced player, Colin Crookshanks, was at the crease and doing what he did best he ensured Derriaghy reached 172 with himself ending up on 36 not out. He shared a productive stand of 28 with Hewitt who scored 16. Derriaghy were happy with their total, but many batsmen were guilty of throwing their wickets away. In reply Armagh were never in the hunt thanks to that burst from Lewis and Hewitt. The two opening bowlers combined to leave Armagh in tatters on 35 for 7. Lewis bowled with good pace and bounce to record 3-31 from his 9 overs while Hewitt took 4-21 and showed great control of line and length. With both bowlers having done their job, Aaron Kinnin came on and took the final wickets, ending with 2 for 3 from 3 overs. It was also promising that Ross Bailey, a 17 year old debutant, got a bowl and in his 2 overs suggested he will play a future part at Derriaghy. The ground fielding and catching was also of a good standard including a direct hit run out by Kinnin.Derriaghy would like to thank Alan Jennings for his kind sponsorship of the match ball.
